Anyone got any ideas?. I found this photo amongst my late father's, (Pat's), papers. No date and no idea what occasion was being celebrated. There are certainly lots of flags and bunting about. Using a magnifying glass on the original photo, it seems Clock House Corner would appear to have garlands around the shop window and also around the clock itself. There is also some sort of placard or notice below the clock which is also surrounded with garlands. I guess that notice would be the clue to the event but (unlike in TV detective stories) I cannot enlarge it to read what it says.

The other quandary is - where is everyone?

If you can date this and/or suggest the event, then please contact me. (Willy)

I have since (June 2006) had a reply from Marion (Hardy) who writes ..." I would imagine that photo was in the very early 1950's - from memory Princess Elizabeth came through town - I don't think she was Queen at that time (which is why it would have been in the early 50's before she was crowned.) We were given a day off school I think and all given little flags. Again - from memory - vaguely I think she came down past the Kings Head Hotel and into the Square - which is why High Street as shown would have been empty if the photo had been taken at that time."

And here is a modern-day photo taken from more or less the same spot. Print them off and compare the two.
